Childminding First Aid Kit

Updated by on December 24, 2010No Comments

All childminders must have a first aid kit. First Aid kits and boxes should always be kept in the same place and should be easily accessible to adults but not children. An additional first aid box may be kept in the car for outings.

The contents should be replaced when used and any out of date items replaced routinely. Remember the contents of the first aid box and the box itself are tax deductible. Do make sure you know how to use the contents of your kit. There are no set contents but here are a few suggestions, all of which should be available from your local chemist.

  1. crepe bandage
  2. large open weave bandage
  3. small open weave bandage
  4. eye pad with bandage
  5. scissors
  6. sterile gauze swabs
  7. small sterile pads with bandage
  8. triangular bandage
  9. hypoallergenic tape
  10. sterile non-adhesive pads, perforated film absorbent dressings (x2)
  11. finger bandage and applicator
  12. disposable gloves latex
  13. safety pins (optional)
  14. disposable laerdal face shield (for resuscitation if trained)
  15. Ear thermometer – electrical thermometer ‘hold to head’ or Strip thermometer
  16. First Aid book or similar instructions
  17. Special cuddly toy
  18. Disinfectant spray (for cleaning up, not for use on children)
  19. Disinfectant wipes (for cleaning up, not for use on children)
  20. Body fluid disposal kit inc : disposable gloves, apron and waste bags, absorbent crystals, plastic scrapper, paper towels

Note: Childminders in Wales are required to have the contents of a 1-20 persons employee kit which dictates contents including how many bandages and safety pins are required.
