NVQ Level 3 in Early Years Childcare and Education

Posted by on December 1, 2010No Comments

The NVQ Level 3 in Early Years Childcare and Education, previously known as NVQ 3 Childcare & Education, is a nationally recognised qualification in all areas of Early Years and is designed to be taken whilst working as a childcarer. Whilst courses such as the DHC focus on theory and are assessed using written responses, the NVQ encourages you to put theory into practice. This means that as well as submitting written work, part of the assessment is done by an assessor who will visit you to observe you at work with children in your own home.

The course consists of eleven mandatory units:

  • Contribute to the protection of children from abuse
  • Establish and maintain relationships with parents
  • Observe and assess the development and behaviour of children
  • Plan and Equip environments for children
  • Plan, implement and evaluate learning activities and experiences
  • Promote children’s language and communication development
  • Promote children’s sensory and intellectual development
  • Promote children’s social and emotional development
  • Promote the physical development of children
  • Provide a framework for the management of behaviour
  • Provide for children’s physical needs

There are also three units to be chosen from the list below, to give a total of fourteen units:

  • Care for and promote the development of babies
  • Create effective working relationships
  • Develop structured programmes for children with special needs
  • Establish and maintain a childcare education service
  • Inform and implement management committee policies and procedures
  • Involve parents in group activities
  • Manage admissions, finance and operating systems in care and education settings
  • Manage yourself
  • Plan, implement and evaluate routines for children
  • Promote the care and education of children with special needs
  • Support parents in developing their parenting skills
  • Support the development of children’s literacy skills
  • Support the development of children’s mathematical skills
  • Visit and support a family in their own home
  • Work with other professionals

If you have completed a previous course such as the DHC or CCP you will be able to use this work towards the NVQ assessments so you do not have to repeat previous work.
